Messiah, the

Messiah, the
   This word (from the Hebrew mashah, meaning "anoint") refers to the anointed one (later translated into Greek as christos and into English as Christ) who was expected to liberate Israel. Many of the Jewish contemporaries of Jesuswere awaiting the arrival of a messiah to deliver them from oppression. (See CCC 436)
